Below we highlight the heart of this self-sustaining program and the profound experiences that make this journey special.
What is the Ethiopia Art Beyond Borders Project?

Our Ethiopia Art Beyond Borders Project began in 2016 when our founder, Jennie Lobato, traveled to Addis Ababa to explore potential partnerships. After interviewing 25 community centers, orphanages, and homeless shelters, we established a meaningful collaboration to bring our programming to Ethiopia. Since 2014, we have taken yearly volunteer groups to continue our work and ensure long-term sustainability.
Why is there a six-year commitment to the program?
We believe in creating lasting impact, so we dedicate six years to each program. The idea is that after 6 years, the program needs a lot less of our daily assistance. Our work continues year-round, even when we are not physically in Ethiopia. We provide ongoing translated curriculum updates and maintain close communication with our in-country Program Director and Program Leads to ensure consistent implementation.
Have you faced any challenges in sustaining the Ethiopia program?
Operating in communities experiencing extreme poverty presents unique challenges. Some of our past programs have been interrupted due to community center closures or Program Leads moving away. We are excited to be in our third consecutive year at a community center in the Karakore community, one of the poorest areas in Addis Ababa. This consistency allows us to make a deeper and more lasting impact.
What does the community center in Karakore provide for children?

Our program at the community center serves upwards of 50 children at a time. Many children rely on the community center for their only meal of the day, and families receive staple food items like rice, flour, and oil each month. Our program provides creative enrichment year-round, giving children an outlet for self-expression, confidence-building, and healing through art.
What happens during the annual volunteer trip to Ethiopia?

Volunteer groups consist of 4-6 team members for 10 days. The goal is to restock art supplies, train new Program Leads, and further support existing ones. We’ve also engaged in special projects such as painting classrooms, creating artwork for the center, painting murals, and purchasing necessary art supply storage cabinets. Volunteers travel together as a team, staying in a local guest house, immersing themselves in Ethiopian culture, and making a meaningful impact.
How much does the trip cost, and what does it include?
Volunteer in Ethiopia costs are covered by a single flat-rate fee, which includes airfare, meals, accommodations, and transportation from ATL airport. Cost of trip: $3600-$4000. Full details can be found on our website.
Do volunteers need to speak the local language of Amharic?

No prior knowledge of Amharic is required! Before departure, we hold several team meetings where volunteers learn essential phrases to enhance their experience and communication with the children.
What safety measures are in place for volunteers?
Safety is a top priority. We notify the American Embassy of our itinerary, follow all recommended precautions, and advise volunteers to check CDC guidelines for health recommendations.
How many volunteers are selected for each trip?
Each team consists of 3 to 6 people to ensure a close-knit and impactful experience.
Can volunteers fundraise for their trip expenses?
Yes! Most of our team members successfully fundraise 100% of their fees. We provide a private fundraising page for volunteers to share with family and friends, and they can also use Facebook or host in-person events to support their journey.
