USING ART AS A

TOOL FOR

SELF-EMPOWERMENT.

WHAT WE DO AND WHY

We contribute to the education of homeless, refugee, asylum-seeking and at-risk 5-10-year-old children by bringing art into their daily lives.*

Children are naturally creative. Many of the world’s children have no means or encouragement to envision a break in the cycle of poverty.

We provide the means to improve school attendance, leading to gains in academic performance.

We supply the materials and art therapy-based instruction that inspire children to emerge from the poverty cycle.

* In 2005, The Rand Corporation observed that involvement in the arts is associated with gains in math, reading, cognitive ability, critical thinking, and verbal skills.

WHY WE EXIST

Although intelligence and skill are generally associated with the fast and efficient firing of neurons, subjects who tested high in creativity had thinner white matter and connecting axons that have the effect of slowing nerve traffic in the brain. This slowdown in the left frontal cortex, a region where emotional and cognitive abilities are integrated, Dr. Jung, suggested, “might allow for the linkage of more disparate ideas, more novelty, and more creativity.”

~ Dr. Rex Jung, research scientist at the Mind Research Network in Albuquerque
